Deciphering Apple’s Mac OS X 10.6.3 v1.1 Update

Apple released Mac OS X 10.6.3 in late March, and then quietly rolled out Mac OS X 10.6.3 v1.1 on April 13 without any information on what changed or who needs to install the new update. The company has finally offered up a little information, so now at least we know that the revised update is targeted at Mac OS X 10.6 users skipping 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 to jump directly to 10.6.3.

Apple’s updated knowledge base article states “The Supplemental Update is for any system that was updated from Mac OS X v10.6 using the Mac OS X Update Combined v10.6.3, build 10D573. It is not needed on systems that were updated from Mac OS X v10.6.1 or 10.6.2, and it is not needed on systems that were updated from Mac OS X v10.6 using the Mac OS X Update Combined v10.6.3, v1.1.”

Additional information about what’s included in version 1.1 of the updater is sadly still missing. Some reports, however, seem to indicate that the revised updater includes fixes for permissions-related issues.

The supplemental update appears in the Software Update application for users that applied the earlier version of the 10.6.3 combo updater to their Mac OS X 10.6 installation — meaning if you need the supplemental updater, you’ll see it in Software Update.

The revised combo updater is also available for download at the Apple Support Web site.
